Qing (Diane) Hu
HCI researcher and designer
With a bachelor’s in linguistics and a master’s in interaction design, I’ve seen conversations at work on two fronts: linguists decode cultures in dialogues, while designers encode interactions that induce dialogues. Conversation may not solve every conflict, but when it’s carefully designed, it facilitates our interaction with machines and nourishes understanding among people. I aim to study how AI takes on new social roles as a mediator of human communication.
My work combines two complementary approaches: grounding socio-technical system design in empirical understanding, and using design as probes to study how humans perceive and negotiate meaning with AI-mediated technologies.
